Biography

I first took up knitting to satisfy my needle craft urges while taking French classes in Nice. Although I preferred sewing at that time, knitting was more practical since it only involved needles, yarn and a pattern. During my six-month stay, I managed to complete two sweaters. Once home, my interests changed and I didn't continue knitting.

Two years ago while looking for quilting books at the library, I happened to come across a book on Christmas stockings. This book inspired me to embark on a project to make each member of my family a special stocking. So far, I’ve only managed to finish two Christmas stocking. There are so many patterns to knit that my original reason for taking up knitting again has been side tracked. I'm usually drawn to projects that involve multiple colors and/or difficult techniques. While I have a knack for the craft of knitting, ideas for unique designs tend to elude me.

Last summer during a hike with friends, I pulled out my current project (Latvian mittens) during our lunch break and worked a few rounds. One of the hikers noticed my knitting and started asking me about it. She also mentioned that she has acquired a fleece from a dear friend that raised prized sheep and wondered whether I would like to have it. Although I had sworn not to learn how to spin because of time constraints, I gladly accepted the fleece. I couldn’t resist free wool, and figured a hand spindle wouldn’t involve too much of a commitment.

Now I’m a proud owner of a Schacht spinning wheel, several hand spindles and lots of fiber. While the fleece has been washed, it’s still waiting to be spun. It sits while I’ve been distracted with colorful rovings that I acquired at fiber festivals.

When I’m not knitting or spinning, I’m usually hiking, camping, snowboarding or traveling with my husband. I also work as a Java Developer building and fixing the back end of websites for a large logistics company.
